Product Detail
Detergent-grade HPMC (Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose) is a non-ionic cellulose ether thickener specifically designed for daily chemical cleaning systems. Its core advantages include rapid dissolution in cold water, high transparency, resistance to salts and alkalis, and excellent compatibility with surfactants. It is primarily used in liquid detergents for thickening, foam stabilization, and preventing stratification; it requires a low dosage while offering a mild feel.

I. Core Characteristics (Specific to Detergent Grade)
· Appearance: White / off-white, rapidly dissolving powder (surface-treated type); odorless, tasteless, non-toxic, and eco-friendly.
· Solubility: Rapid dispersion in cold water (no clumping or agglomeration); dissolves into a transparent solution within 5–10 minutes (transparency of 1% aqueous solution ≥ 90%). Unaffected by pH levels between 3 and 11, making it suitable for high-alkali and high-salt formulations.
· Thickening Efficacy: Achieves significant thickening at low dosages (0.2%–0.5%); viscosity ranges from 4,000 to 60,000 mPa·s (2% aqueous solution at 25°C), with 20,000–30,000 mPa·s being the most commonly used range.
· Stability: Resistant to salts and electrolytes (compatible with anionic and non-ionic surfactants, fragrances, and colorants); ensures long-term stability without stratification, viscosity loss, or microbial spoilage. Exhibits freeze-thaw stability and maintains viscosity well at elevated temperatures (≤ 60°C).
· Mild Touch: Modified from natural cellulose; non-irritating and hypoallergenic. Forms a smooth film, leaving the skin feeling non-tight after washing and fabrics feeling soft.
II. Core Functions in Detergents
Efficient Thickening (Primary Function): Enhances viscosity and flow properties, resolving the common issues of products being "too thin and runny" or "too thick and difficult to pour." It ensures smooth pouring and appropriate "cling" to container walls, imparting a premium texture to the product.
System Stabilization (Anti-Stratification / Anti-Precipitation): Highly compatible with surfactants such as SLES, AES, and CAPB; effectively inhibits oil-water phase separation and the sedimentation of solid particles. It also stabilizes foam, ensuring a fine, long-lasting lather that is easy to rinse off. Enhances user experience and improves spreadability, ensuring a smooth and easy-to-apply feel during use; forms a moisturizing film to reduce skin dryness; the transparent formulation maintains a crystal-clear appearance.
Rheology Control (Anti-sagging / Pump-friendly): Provides pseudoplasticity—thins under shear (facilitating easy mixing and filling) yet thickens at rest (preventing flow and ensuring excellent wall-clinging properties).
III. Key Technical Specifications (Essential for Product Selection)
index | Detergent-Grade HPMC (Recommended Values) | explanation |
Viscosity (2%, 25°C) | 20,000–30,000 mPa·s | General-purpose thickening; Low viscosity (4,000–10,000) is used for low-viscosity or transparent formulations; High viscosity (≥50,000) is used for high-viscosity or wall-clinging formulations. |
Transparency (1% Aqueous Solution) | ≥90% | Essential for Transparent Detergents: No Turbidity or Flocculation |
Fineness | 80-mesh | Finely powdered and instantly soluble, with no gritty texture. |
Ash Content | ≤3% | Low impurity content; does not affect color or stability. |
Moisture Content | ≤5% | Anti-caking, storage-stable |
Degree of Substitution (DS) | 1.2–1.6 | Balancing Solubility, Transparency, and Salt Tolerance |
IV. Typical Applications and Recommended Dosage
· Laundry Detergents / Dishwashing Liquids: Dosage 0.2%–0.5%; provides thickening and foam stabilization, ensures transparency without stratification, and improves tactile feel.
· Shampoos / Body Washes: Dosage 0.3%–0.8%; stabilizes foam, thickens, moisturizes, imparts smoothness, and reduces skin irritation.
· Hand Soaps / Sanitizing Gels: Dosage 0.5%–1.0%; compatible with high-alcohol systems (up to 75%), provides thickening without stickiness, and forms an antimicrobial film.
V. Usage Instructions and Precautions
✅ Proper Usage (To Avoid Clumping)
1. Dry Powder Pre-mixing (Recommended): First, thoroughly blend the HPMC with a small amount of other dry raw materials (e.g., salt, baking soda) before adding the mixture to water and stirring; this ensures faster dispersion.
2. Warm Water Dissolution: Dissolve using warm water at 30–40°C (for faster dissolution), then allow the solution to cool to room temperature; avoid using boiling water directly, as this may lead to degradation.
3. Late-Stage Addition: Add surfactants, fragrances, and colorants last to minimize interference with the dissolution process of the HPMC.
VI. Differences from Construction-Grade HPMC
· Detergent Grade: Rapid dissolution, high transparency, low ash content, strong salt tolerance, and a mild tactile feel; features a low dosage (0.2%–0.8%) and focuses primarily on thickening and foam stabilization.
· Construction Grade: Strong water retention, high viscosity, and low cost; features a higher dosage (0.1%–0.3% relative to cement weight) and focuses primarily on water retention and crack resistance; characterized by slow dissolution, poor transparency, and high ash content, making it unsuitable for use in food or daily chemical products.
VII. Summary of Advantages
✅ High Efficiency at Low Dosage: Effective at concentrations as low as 0.2%, ensuring cost-effective formulation.
✅ Transparent & Stable: Highly transparent; resistant to salts and alkalis; remains unseparated over the long term.
✅ Gentle & Safe: Non-toxic and non-irritating; suitable for sensitive skin and infant/toddler products.
✅ High Compatibility: Compatible with a wide range of surfactants and additives, offering exceptional formulation flexibility.
